It’s Healthy to Celebrate
Newcastle Pride 2017, one of the North East’s biggest free festivals, returns to Newcastle Town Moor from Friday July 21 and will include three days of live entertainment and events.
In our physically and mentally demanding lives there is much need for appropriate, LGBT inclusive health information and services in order to ensure we all have the means to respond to the challenges we face.
This year SPHZ will be filled with a whole range of organisations and services who all care about you and your health. This year the theme within SPHZ will be ‘Celebrate’ – this is partly because 2017 marks the 10th birthday of Newcastle Pride in its current incarnation… and also because we aim to promote the concept that we should all find a reason to celebrate every day, no matter how large or small, and that this is important to health and wellbeing for everyone.
Some of the health information available this year includes – gender diversity, young people, rape and sexual assault, addictions, stop smoking help, hate crime reporting, cancer prevention and support, Alzheimer’s and dementia, debt advice, stroke prevention and support…serious topics but our SPHZ is intended for you to get serious information in fun and light hearted ways.
Back by popular demand…we will of course be including a designated area for Chlamydia testing for 15 to 25 year olds (easy and non embarrassing).
Newcastle’s Sexual Health Service will be doing something very different for Pride 2017
Do it Yourself STI tests
New Croft Sexual Health Service are trialling a new DIY STI and HIV testing kit for men who have sex with men. It would be great if you could help by using the kit and giving the New Croft team some feedback on how you found it. Come and see them in the Steve Paske Health Zone!
Remember anyone who is, or has ever been sexually active with any other person no matter what gender, sexual orientation, age should get tested for STI’s to ensure that they remain sexually healthy. For information on your local sexual health clinic and community HIV test services check the MESMAC and SHINE websites
“While the festival is about fun, entertainment and celebration our focus is also very much on the mental and physical health of members of the LGBT community,” said Mark Nichols, Chairman of Northern Pride which organises the event.
