Northern Proud Voices

Newcastle’s first  LGBT choir, Northern Proud Voices, was founded in March 2011.

36 people attended the first meeting of the choir on 25 March 2011 at St. James’s United Reformed Church in Northumberland Road, which was the first venue for rehearsals for over a year. In the months that followed the choir’s inception the singers tested their voices with a range of music: show tunes, modern pop, Gospel music and, later in the year, traditional carols and Christmas music. In the first half of 2012 they even tried out some music hall songs.

NPV’s first public performance was given at Newcastle Pride on 16 July 2011. Though modest in scope, the performances were impressive, with some 26 singers on the stage in Leazes Park belting out “Super Trouper” and “Don’t Stop Believing” to an appreciative audience.

This first success was followed by two end-of-year performances. On the evening of 16 December 2011 NPV gave an hour long festive performance at Gateshead Town Hall, in association with soloists from the West End Operatic Society and other solo singers. The following day NPV was hard at work again at the Beamish Museum, singing carols and Christmas music in the town street, and later to organ accompaniment in the chapel.

six years later and Northern Proud Voices has gone from strength to strength. 2017 has already seen our biggest single rehearsal with 53 members attending and we are looking forward to not only taking centre stage during pride season but an amazing grant from the big Lottery will allow NPV to travel to Manchester to take part in the Hand in hand festival in august!
